one thing that keeps getting lost in the talks of hubris and the memes that have popped up in the past 48 hours is that the vast majority of the people who died in the actual Titanic disaster were not the millionaires.

no, the vast majority of the people who died in the Titanic disaster were the poor third-class passengers (528 lost, including whole families) and the working class crew (696 lost, many who stayed at their posts to the end). more first-class men were saved than third-class children. the city of Southampton, where so many of the crew came from, was devastated by the disaster—entire streets were in mourning. if you take a look at the names of the victims, you’ll see a wide variety of ages and nationalities and socioeconomic backgrounds—this was not solely a rich people’s pleasure cruise

the Titanic disaster was a goddamned tragedy that shocked the world because it affected people from all across the spectrum of Edwardian society, from the richest business tycoon to the poorest immigrant seeking a new, better life in America

it is not a 1:1 comparison to what is happening now

I’m all for punching up at billionaires and making memes at their expense when they do stupid shit, but maybe just this once don’t make memes about a group of human beings trapped in a small, confined metal tube at the bottom of the ocean being potentially alive and actively running out of air and suffocating as we speak? With billions of tons of water crushing the submarine from all sides? Just maybe?

this should not be a controversial opinion no one deserves to die like that

I’m seeing so many people make absolutely disgusting posts about the missing submersible. Yes, it is terrible that anyone could amass enough wealth to be able to do this. Yes, I consider the visitation of the Titanic by tourists to be the desecration of a gravesite. Yes, this company is a walking red flag. But there are people on this sub. One of them is a 19 year old. There are families right now grieving because they’re now facing the reality that their loved one may have died in the middle of the ocean and they’ll likely have nothing of them left. These people, no matter who they are or what they have, are people. Criticise the company. Absolutely criticise the capitalist system that has allowed people to hoard massive amounts of wealth, the same system that will prioritise rich sightseers over hundreds of migrants. Criticise the fact that people are allowed to take trips down there out of some morbid curiosity. However, it is absolutely callous to make jokes about peoples’ potential deaths like this.

Hot take: wishing death on actual people, no mater how fucking stupid they are, is fucked up and anyone that thinks a living person deserves to slowly suffocate needs help

some ppl on here are trying to act all progressive and stuff but then are showing their true colors now. wishing the death penalty on people for being stupid and disrespectful is not progressive. wishing torture on people - because that is what such a death would qualify as - is not progressive.

it’s sick. it’s horrible. why are you so eager to revel in violence and suffering? maybe think on that. you can dress it up and try to pretend like it’s for some noble reason but we know it’s not. you’re just looking for an outlet and reason to be able to get away with it. people suffering is not fun or funny or ok actually.

that-bi-fan:

Yes, visiting the Titanic is bad, 1500 people died there, it shouldn’t be hailed as a tourist attraction. But.

Those five people on that shitty submarine? They deserve to go home to their families. They deserve to live, to hold their loved ones again, to hold their children.

Do not wish death on them. You don’t know them. Their monetary status doesn’t matter. They’re people. Two of them are father and son.

Shame on you for rejoicing in the suffering of others.
